India Scales Livestock Credit as Milk Production Surpasses Demand

Over 50 lakh Indian farmers now hold Kisan Credit Cards for animal husbandry, a sharp rise from 15 lakh in 2021. As national milk production hits 247.87 million tonnes, the government is funneling capital subsidies and veterinary resources into rural regions to transform small-scale dairying into a professionalized, profitable enterprise.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh confirmed that milk output for 2024–25 has outpaced domestic demand of 243 million tonnes, bolstered by a 407 million dollar export market. This growth relies on the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which focuses on genetic improvement of indigenous cattle, and the National Livestock Mission, which provides 50 percent capital subsidies to cooperatives and self-help groups for breeding and feed infrastructure.

To protect this expanding sector, the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme now funds 100 percent of vaccination costs for major pathogens like Brucellosis and Foot and Mouth Disease. In Tamil Nadu, these efforts manifest in 245 mobile veterinary units, providing doorstep care to rural producers. By integrating formal banking with intensive disease surveillance and breeding support, the government aims to bridge the gap between unorganized rural producers and larger market value chains.
