U.S. Disposes of Seized Venezuelan Tankers Through Indian Shipbreakers

Two oil tankers once central to illicit crude shipments from Venezuela and Iran are destined for scrap yards in India. After being seized by U.S. military forces during a January operation, the vessels Era and Lileo were sold to Dubai-based Global Marketing Systems to be broken down for parts.

The sale follows a protracted legal process that cleared the vessels for disposal after their capture for violating international sanctions. While the final purchase price remains undisclosed, the transfer of ownership to Global Marketing Systems marks the conclusion of a high-profile interdiction effort. CEO Anil Sharma confirmed the transaction was finalized under court authorization, despite lingering complexities regarding the tankers' prior registration and history.

These two ships represent a broader enforcement campaign by the United States against maritime sanctions evasion. Since the start of the year, American military and Coast Guard units have targeted up to 10 vessels suspected of facilitating illegal oil transport in the region. The dismantling of the Era and Lileo serves as a definitive end to their service as instruments of sanction-busting trade, effectively removing them from the global fleet.
