Global Markets Edge Higher on Hopes for Strait of Hormuz Agreement

Global equities climbed on Monday as Iran signaled progress on a maritime shipping agreement with Oman, potentially easing tensions in the critical Strait of Hormuz. While traders monitored the geopolitical developments, broader market sentiment remained anchored by anticipation of upcoming U.S. inflation data scheduled for release later this week.

The Stoxx 600 index in Europe posted a modest 0.1% gain during morning trading. Across the Atlantic, futures for the S&P 500 rose 0.2%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq led with a 0.4% increase. Despite the diplomatic movement, oil prices held steady at $83.50 per barrel, remaining well below the highs reached in late April.

Iran stated the deal is nearing completion but conditioned the full reopening of the waterway on further concessions from the United States. Markets continue to lean on a foundation of strong corporate earnings and cooling expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, a trend solidified by recent lackluster U.S. employment figures.
