World Bank Invests $60 Million in Congo Poultry and Aquaculture

The Republic of Congo will receive $60 million in World Bank financing to revitalize its poultry and aquaculture sectors. By prioritizing local producers, the initiative aims to bridge critical gaps in feed and infrastructure while fostering a more resilient, diversified national economy capable of sustaining long-term food security.

The program addresses systemic bottlenecks that have long constrained local farmers, specifically the high cost of inputs like fingerlings and day-old chicks. Beyond raw supplies, the investment targets the development of climate-resilient infrastructure within designated agricultural zones, ensuring that operations remain viable despite environmental shifts. Technical training will run alongside these physical upgrades to equip workers with the skills necessary for large-scale, competitive production.

Cheick F. Kanté, World Bank Division Director for the Republic of Congo, emphasized that the project relies on a synergy between public funding and private sector participation. By improving the regulatory environment, the government hopes to attract additional private capital to the industry. The initiative focuses on creating jobs across the entire supply chain, from processing and trading to specialized support services, with a specific emphasis on expanding opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs.
