The criticism follows the July 20 demonstrations where police deployed tear gas and pellet guns against students protesting irregularities in the medical entrance exam. Despite the severity of these measures, the government has refused to address the issue in Parliament for three weeks, consistently blocking Opposition motions for a formal debate. Gandhi argues that the concentration of authority under the current administration makes Shah directly responsible for the conduct of security forces in Delhi.
Beyond calling for a resignation, the Congress leader is pushing for a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the events. He characterized the Home Minister’s prolonged refusal to comment as a binary failure: either an active endorsement of state force against peaceful protesters or a fundamental inability to manage the departments under his control.
