Explosive drone discovery at Leipzig/Halle triggers terror probe

The discovery of the device on Tuesday forced flight diversions and partial closures at the facility in Schkeuditz, a site that handles roughly 1.4 million metric tons of freight annually. As Germany's second-largest cargo hub, the airport is vital to global logistics, hosting major operations for DHL, Lufthansa, and Amazon. Beyond its commercial status, the airport serves as the primary base for NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution, an essential conduit for equipment destined for the alliance’s eastern flank.

Authorities have remained cautious regarding attribution, though the proximity of the drone to a group of Ukrainian An-124 cargo planes—one of which was reportedly carrying military ammunition—has intensified the focus of the investigation. Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, explicitly linked the event to Russian state actors, describing it as an attempted act of terror. This incident follows a string of security scares in 2024, including fires in air cargo parcels at a DHL warehouse and unauthorized drone sightings near energy terminals and military bases. While the Russian embassy has not responded to inquiries, German security agencies are treating the breach as part of a wider pattern of sabotage and hybrid aggression.
