Senate Committee Moves to Hold Fauci in Contempt

Senator Rand Paul, who chairs the committee and has long targeted Fauci, spearheaded the referral. The conflict centers on Fauci’s refusal to answer questions despite a January 2025 presidential pardon from Joe Biden, intended to shield him from politically motivated prosecution. Paul argues the pardon renders the Fifth Amendment claim invalid, while Fauci maintains the senator is pursuing a personal vendetta aimed at imprisonment.

Although a full Senate vote faces long odds due to Democratic opposition, Paul has floated the possibility of bypassing the chamber to send the referral directly to the Justice Department. Should the case reach the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington under Jeanine Pirro, prosecutors will determine whether to pursue a grand jury indictment. Meanwhile, state-level investigations in Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama continue to shadow the former NIAID director, as federal pardons do not offer protection against state-level charges.
