China accuses US of blocking Huawei ties in Argentina

The Chinese embassy in Buenos Aires has accused the United States of weaponizing visa revocations to sabotage commercial partnerships between local firms and Huawei. Beijing’s diplomatic mission labeled the interference an affront to national sovereignty and an aggressive distortion of free-market principles intended to stifle Chinese influence in Latin America.

The diplomatic friction centers on allegations that US officials are actively promoting a China threat narrative to justify broad interventions in regional business. According to the Chinese statement, the US embassy is abusing the concept of national security to hinder routine cooperation. The US embassy in Argentina has yet to provide a formal response to these claims.

This tension arises as the administration of Donald Trump seeks to counter Beijing’s deepening footprint in Argentina, a nation where China remains the second-largest trading partner. The geopolitical tug-of-war persists despite ongoing economic integration, highlighted by the recent renewal of a five-year bilateral currency swap agreement between the central banks of China and Argentina, valued at 130 billion yuan, or roughly $19.3 billion.
