The government’s endorsement arrives after media minister Lisa Nandy previously signaled potential intervention, citing public interest concerns. To secure the green light, Paramount pledged to maintain the distinct editorial identities of linear and on-demand services, including Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, for at least five years. Furthermore, Channel 5 will continue its public service broadcasting obligations through 2034, with its news division remaining operationally separate from CNN and CBS.
Paramount also guaranteed that its content commissioning workforce in Britain will not shrink and that the quality of locally produced programming will remain stable. Supporting the government’s stance, the Competition and Markets Authority concluded that the deal poses no threat to market competition across movie distribution or streaming services. With the British investigation resolved, the focus shifts to the United States, where litigation led by California remains the final major obstacle to finalizing the transaction.
