Military payload found near drone at Leipzig airport

The presence of munitions on a nearby Antonov An-124 freighter elevates the security stakes at an airport designated as critical German infrastructure. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the drone incident as a hybrid attack, signaling an increased threat level. Saxony police have yet to confirm the details regarding the cargo, while investigators continue to search for debris from a separate mid-air collision involving a different freight jet that occurred the same night.

That second aircraft sustained light damage after striking an unidentified object while performing a go-around, eventually diverting to Hanover. Although flight operations at Leipzig/Halle have since returned to normal, the proximity of the drone to one of the world’s largest cargo planes has prompted sharp political rhetoric. Lawmaker Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, directly attributed the disruptions to Russian activity. The Russian Embassy in Berlin has not responded to requests for comment.
