Kharge Demands Amit Shah Address Parliament Over Student Protests

Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge is pressing the government to force Home Minister Amit Shah to appear before the Rajya Sabha and account for recent police actions against protesters. Kharge argues the administration must apologize to the students involved rather than demanding contrition from those voicing their grievances against the state.

The Congress president asserted that the government holds the power to resolve the parliamentary impasse but chooses to remain silent. According to Kharge, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar previously directed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to facilitate a statement from the Home Minister, yet the instruction has yielded no results. Kharge characterized Rijiju’s role as ineffective, claiming the minister merely relays requests that subsequently vanish without action.

Beyond calling for the Home Minister’s testimony, the Opposition leader demanded an apology from the Prime Minister regarding the handling of the protests. Kharge also highlighted his struggle to maintain a voice within the chamber, alleging that he is consistently barred from raising points of order. To justify the ongoing disruptions, he invoked the words of the late Arun Jaitley, who once famously described parliamentary obstruction as a legitimate facet of democratic practice. The party intends to sustain its pressure on the government, having already coordinated with its allies to champion the cause of students across the country.
