Thailand Presses Myanmar for Stability Under ASEAN Framework

Bangkok is demanding a return to stability in Myanmar, insisting that the military junta adhere to the ASEAN peace plan to resolve the ongoing civil war. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that Thailand remains deeply invested in regional security and is not turning a blind eye to the escalating conflict.

The government is now pushing for direct access to key political figures, specifically calling for an ASEAN special envoy to meet with detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This request signals a shift toward more active diplomacy, as the minister noted that Myanmar must actively address the mounting concerns voiced by its neighbor.

While the humanitarian and political crisis continues to strain regional relations, Thailand’s stance highlights the urgency of the ASEAN five-point consensus. Bangkok maintains that sustained peace cannot be achieved without a meaningful dialogue between the junta and the democratic forces currently sidelined by the conflict.
