Opposition ramps up pressure in Parliament over Jantar Mantar crackdown

Conflict in the Lok Sabha is set to intensify as opposition leaders demand a formal explanation from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the July 20 police response to student protesters. The standoff centers on allegations of excessive force and a separate ongoing probe into financial irregularities surrounding Ram Mandir donations.

Opposition ramps up pressure in Parliament over Jantar Mantar crackdown

Congress MP Manickam Tagore has submitted an adjournment motion seeking to suspend the day’s legislative agenda to address the police conduct at Jantar Mantar. In his formal notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General, Tagore challenged the proportionality of the force deployed, citing reports of lathi charges, tear gas, and the use of pellet guns against students. The motion demands a clear account of who authorized the crackdown and whether the actions aligned with constitutional safeguards for peaceful assembly.

Beyond immediate tactical questions, the opposition is pushing for a transparent judicial inquiry into the incident. Tagore’s motion specifically requests data on the number of students injured or detained and calls for the withdrawal of all criminal proceedings initiated against participants. The opposition argues that the government must pivot from coercive measures toward constructive dialogue, suggesting that if excessive force is confirmed, the Prime Minister should issue a formal apology. This confrontation over civil liberties and the right to dissent remains a central friction point for the remainder of the Monsoon session.
