Sonam Wangchuk Backs Jharkhand Student Leader’s Hunger Strike

After days of total fasting, student leader Devendra Nath Mahato has agreed to consume water and salt following a personal appeal from activist Sonam Wangchuk. Mahato remains committed to his indefinite hunger strike at Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, demanding accountability for alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations.

The protest, which began on July 25, centers on widespread allegations of paper leaks and corruption within the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and JSSC CGL exams. Mahato, who launched his indefinite hunger strike on August 2, reached a breaking point due to physical exhaustion before Wangchuk intervened via a direct call. While Mahato has conceded to taking water, he maintains he will refuse food until the state government addresses the students' grievances.

Wangchuk’s involvement has bolstered the protesters' resolve, with Mahato securing a commitment from the activist to remain engaged with the movement until a resolution is reached. This solidarity comes as pressure mounts on the administration. Chief Minister Hemant Soren recently stated that his government is monitoring the situation and awaiting the findings of an ongoing investigation, assuring students that their concerns are being heard. Despite these assurances, the sit-in at the stadium continues, reflecting deep-seated frustration over a recruitment system that aspirants claim has been compromised for over two decades.
