Congress MPs Demand Accountability for Police Crackdown on Protesters

Pawan Khera and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led a high-profile march in Parliament on Wednesday, demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah account for the alleged use of force against student demonstrators. The opposition is pressing for answers regarding police conduct during a July 20 protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party.

The opposition's push for transparency intensified as Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, walked from the Gandhi statue to the Parliament’s Makar Dwar. Khera explicitly challenged the government to explain the use of lathi charges, tear gas, and pellet guns against young citizens. Beyond the immediate police action, the party is leveraging the parliamentary session to demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and investigate allegations of financial misconduct concerning donations for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra underscored the gravity of the situation, asserting that the administration cannot operate as a royal court. She insisted that public officials who authorized the deployment of force against students must be identified and held responsible. The parliamentary proceedings have faced repeated disruptions this week, with opposition parties refusing to move forward until the Home Minister provides a formal statement on the July 20 events in Delhi.
