Tehran Targets Strategic Oversight of Strait of Hormuz Shipping Lanes

Iran is pushing for direct authority over inbound maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, seeking the power to intervene in shipping movements under a proposal currently under negotiation with Oman. The plan aims to reconfigure navigation protocols for one of the world's most critical energy transit corridors.

The proposed framework would grant Iranian authorities visibility over outbound vessels while establishing a formal checkpoint system. Under the current discussions, outbound ships would navigate a corridor between the Iranian and Omani coasts. Clearance for these exits would be processed through Oman, provided that Tehran receives prior notification of the vessel’s passage.

A senior Iranian official confirmed that these terms represent the core of the ongoing diplomatic dialogue. While the talks remain in a sensitive phase, the official indicated that Tehran is firm in its stance, suggesting little room for compromise regarding its demand for increased operational control over the waterway.
