African Development Bank Funds $18.8 Million Boost for Ghana Rice

Ghana will receive $18.8 million from the African Development Bank to revitalize its domestic rice sector through the Regional West Africa Resilient Rice Value Chains project. This initiative aims to slash reliance on foreign imports while hardening local farming against the mounting pressures of shifting climate patterns.

The funding targets the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone, an area holding significant agricultural potential hampered by poor infrastructure and environmental volatility. By deploying modern machinery, climate-resilient seeds, and expanded irrigation systems, the program seeks to bridge the widening gap between domestic production and surging consumer demand.

Halima Hashi, the bank's country manager for Ghana, noted that the project extends beyond basic farming support. It focuses on modernizing processing facilities and tightening supply chains to invite private-sector participation. These upgrades are designed to stabilize food security and shield local consumers from the volatility of global commodity prices, while simultaneously creating sustained employment across the agricultural value chain. The investment aligns with the national Feed Ghana Programme, positioning the country to move toward self-sufficiency in a critical staple crop.
