Puglia Secures €150 Million EIB Loan for Regional Infrastructure

A €150 million injection from the European Investment Bank is set to overhaul Puglia’s public services, marking the first phase of a broader €2.34 billion investment strategy. The funding targets critical upgrades in healthcare, water management, and sustainable transport to bolster resilience across the southern Italian region.

Puglia Secures €150 Million EIB Loan for Regional Infrastructure

The initial €50 million tranche, now officially signed, anchors the 2021–2027 Regional Programme and the Cohesion Agreement between the Italian government and Puglia. This capital infusion supports a wide array of civil works, ranging from school construction and wastewater treatment to energy systems designed to mitigate environmental risks like droughts and flooding.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the project aims to improve daily life for Puglia’s 4 million residents, with roughly 2 million people slated to see direct benefits from modernized healthcare facilities. The initiative serves a dual economic purpose: while upgrading public services, the construction cycle is projected to generate over 14,000 person-years of temporary employment.

EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti emphasized that the loan underscores the bank's focus on sustainable mobility and climate resilience. Puglia President Antonio Decaro noted that the funds provide the necessary leverage to advance strategic regional goals, aligning the local economy with the broader European Union 2021–2027 cohesion policy.
