Aung San Suu Kyi Appears in Rare Images Following ICRC Meeting

Four photographs released by Myanmar’s military-backed government show detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s resident representative in Naypyitaw. This encounter marks the first publicly acknowledged contact between the Nobel laureate and an international humanitarian official since her arrest following the 2021 coup.

The images depict the 81-year-old democracy icon in traditional attire, engaged in conversation within a sparsely furnished room. One photograph features Suu Kyi cutting a cake inscribed with a birthday message dated June 29, 2026. While the junta presented these visuals as a sign of transparency, Reuters could not independently verify the timing or location of the event, and the ICRC has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the meeting.

Suu Kyi is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence on charges widely condemned by rights groups as politically motivated. Although authorities announced her transfer from prison to house arrest in April following the installation of Min Aung Hlaing as president, access to the former leader remains strictly controlled. Previous requests from ASEAN envoys to visit her have been denied, and her family continues to express alarm over her physical wellbeing. This rare appearance offers a glimpse into her status, yet fundamental questions persist regarding her long-term freedom and the lack of independent oversight.
