Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev characterized the strike as an act of piracy and maritime robbery. While the corporation confirmed the loss of its vessel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy offered a different account of the strike’s target. Zelenskiy claimed on X that the operation successfully destroyed the Yanina, a sanctioned Russian container ship with a capacity exceeding 100,000 tons.
This incident marks an escalation in the ongoing maritime conflict, as both Moscow and Kyiv intensify their efforts to disrupt shipping routes they allege support the opposing side’s military operations. The sinking underscores the increasing vulnerability of civilian-flagged vessels operating in contested waters as both nations prioritize the destruction of logistics chains.
