Kyiv Protesters Demand Reinstatement of Defence Minister Fedorov

Protesters gathered in the capital’s historic center before filling Khreshchatyk, signaling that the government’s move to oust Fedorov in mid-July remains a source of intense friction. While Zelenskiy initially cited a conflict with former commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi as the primary reason for the dismissal, the lack of transparency has fueled speculation that the move was intended to stifle efforts to address corruption within the defense sector. Fedorov, who has declined alternative government roles, has hinted at such institutional resistance.

Matteo Mecacci, director of the European Policy Institute in Kyiv, noted that while newer military appointments may stabilize the command structure, the unrest reflects a broader struggle for civilian oversight and institutional trust.
