While the initial flash will likely remain invisible from Earth, telescopes may track the resulting plume of dust and rubble for minutes. Benjamin Fernando of the Los Alamos National Laboratory suggests the impact will carve a hole roughly 90 feet wide and 16 feet deep, providing valuable data on how artificial debris might threaten future lunar missions.
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri will monitor the event, with Danuri passing within two miles of the rocket shortly before the crash. Although this specific strike poses no danger to current operations, experts view it as a warning sign. As global space agencies and private firms ramp up lunar exploration, the incident highlights the urgent need for better traffic management in deep space to protect future bases and astronauts.
