Hyderabad police name Meta India head in case over anti-Modi videos

Deputy commissioner of police V. Aravind Babu confirmed that authorities are preparing to issue a formal notice to Meta Platforms. While the company stated it is cooperating with relevant agencies to resolve the issue, the personal naming of a senior executive remains an outlier in India's regulatory environment. Legal experts note that holding leadership personally liable typically requires evidence of active involvement or specific knowledge of the content in question.

This development occurs as New Delhi aggressively tightens digital oversight. Since February, social media platforms face a three-hour window to remove content flagged by the government or courts, or risk losing their legal liability protections. The tension between the government and the tech giant has been escalating, fueled by recent instances where Facebook briefly restricted a post from the Prime Minister. While Meta labeled that restriction an error, the incident triggered an immediate summons from the IT ministry. With India serving as Facebook’s largest user base, the company remains under significant pressure to improve its moderation of misinformation and political speech.
