UK Seeks Extradition of Suspected Iranian Spy in Cyprus

Sultanov, a resident of Islington, north London, remains in custody in Cyprus following his initial arrest in 2025. This case represents the first time Britain has invoked the National Security Act for an overseas investigation. According to the Metropolitan Police, the alleged espionage occurred between May 11 and June 22, 2024, focusing on the strategically vital RAF Akrotiri facility. Cypriot police confirmed he was formally rearrested on July 17 to facilitate the extradition process.

Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing in London, stated that the operation demonstrates Britain's capacity to utilize national security laws against hostile state activity targeting overseas military assets. The IRGC has previously threatened to strike British bases if they facilitate U.S. military actions against Iran. Tensions surrounding the base have escalated following a March 2 drone strike by a Shahed-type craft, which caused minor damage to the site. In response to the heightened regional volatility, the British government clarified that the base would remain excluded from defensive agreements involving U.S. operations in the region.
