The discovery occurred during the mission's 4,930th and 4,931st Martian days, as the rover navigated the valley floor. Captured in a 360-degree panorama, the fractures measure between 4 and 8 centimeters across, creating a uniform pattern that wraps around the base of local geological features. Ashwin Vasavada, project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, noted that the scale of this formation is distinct from anything previously recorded by the rover.
Researchers are now analyzing the chemistry and structure of these polygons to determine their origin. While some Martian formations are confirmed mud cracks, the team is investigating whether these specific textures resulted from thermal cycling or the compression of ancient, water-saturated sediments. By studying these patterns, scientists hope to reconstruct the environmental history of the site and identify the geological forces that shaped the surface.
