Moscow Rejects Romanian Airspace Breach Claims

Russian officials have dismissed allegations of airspace violations as baseless, labeling the recent diplomatic fallout a calculated distraction from Romania’s military support for Ukraine. The rejection follows Bucharest’s decision to expel a Russian diplomat, a move that has further strained the already fragile relations between the two nations.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova characterized the reports of drone incursions as staged provocations. She claimed that the Romanian leadership is attempting to camouflage the domestic consequences of its alignment with Kyiv, suggesting that the public would favor a more neutral diplomatic course. This rhetoric signals a hardening of Moscow’s stance toward NATO members bordering the conflict zone.

Romania, however, remains firm in its security assessments. The expulsion of the Russian official was a direct response to what Bucharest describes as persistent and unauthorized airspace incursions. Local air defenses have remained on high alert, with pilots intercepting Russian drones in recent weeks. These incidents have intensified regional anxieties, particularly following a May drone crash that resulted in civilian injuries, underscoring the risks of the war spilling across the border.
