The Commerce Department’s latest figures reveal that the industrial sector remains resilient, bolstered by a significant upward revision of May’s data. While the broader market faced headwinds from persistent tariffs and uncertainty in the Middle East, high-tech capital expenditures provided a necessary buffer. FWDBONDS chief economist Christopher Rupkey noted that this sustained commitment to technological infrastructure is currently the primary engine of economic momentum.
Beyond the AI-driven tech boom, the durable goods sector showed signs of stabilization. Although transportation equipment saw a slight decline, a concurrent rise in civilian aircraft orders suggests a broader recovery. Manufacturers are currently benefiting from a combination of inventory restocking and tax incentives, which—when paired with the aggressive expansion of AI capabilities—have created a manufacturing environment that is outperforming initial forecasts despite external geopolitical pressures.
