Myanmar Remains Excluded from ASEAN Summitry

Myanmar’s military leadership will remain sidelined from upcoming ASEAN gatherings as the bloc continues to withhold high-level invitations. Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa Lazaro confirmed Thursday that the country’s return to regional diplomacy hinges on a stalled peace process that shows little sign of progress.

Myanmar Remains Excluded from ASEAN Summitry

The ongoing civil war within Myanmar has effectively frozen its participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. While the regional bloc previously established a five-point consensus to guide the country toward stability, the junta's failure to implement these measures has left the path to diplomatic reintegration blocked. Lazaro, who serves as the ASEAN special envoy on Myanmar, indicated that the formal assessment of the junta's compliance remains an active, ongoing process. Until the military regime demonstrates meaningful adherence to the agreed-upon peace strategy, the chair will continue to favor non-political representation for Myanmar, keeping its top-tier officials at a distance from pivotal regional discussions.
