Congress MP Files Privilege Motion Over Police Treatment of Rahul Gandhi

Congress MP Hibi Eden has formally submitted a notice for a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha, alleging that Delhi Police officers committed a breach of parliamentary rights during a July 21 demonstration. The complaint centers on the forceful detention of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and several female lawmakers.

The incident occurred during a protest against alleged examination irregularities and systemic paper leaks. Demonstrators demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing a failure of oversight within the Central Government. The situation escalated when police intervened to clear the assembly.

In his communication to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General, Eden described the police response as brutal manhandling. He specifically highlighted the treatment of Rahul Gandhi, who was transported to Chhatrasal Stadium against his will. Eden contends that forcing a Leader of Opposition into custody represents a direct affront to parliamentary immunity. The motion seeks an official inquiry into these actions, framing the police conduct as a broader attempt to suppress opposition dissent through physical intimidation.
