Argentina’s Economic Momentum Cools in April

Argentina’s economic activity grew by a meager 0.2% in April, falling significantly short of the 2.3% expansion analysts predicted. The latest figures from the INDEC statistics agency reveal a sharp deceleration from March’s 1.6% growth, highlighting the volatility of the nation's recovery under President Javier Milei’s austerity-focused agenda.

The modest gains recorded in agriculture, livestock, and mining were barely sufficient to counter widespread contraction across other sectors. Eight of the categories tracked by the monthly economic indicator saw year-on-year declines, with the fishing industry suffering the most pronounced drop. Manufacturing, alongside wholesale and retail trade, also retreated, underscoring the uneven nature of the country's current fiscal trajectory.

President Milei continues to implement aggressive public spending cuts intended to stabilize hyperinflation. While these measures aim to create a foundation for long-term industrial and construction growth, the immediate impact remains turbulent. The stark gap between market expectations and the actual 0.2% output suggests that the transition toward a revitalized economy faces significant headwinds as consumer demand and industrial production struggle to gain consistent traction.
