National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac dismissed Coupang’s attempt to minimize the scale of the leak, demanding accountability for the exposure of sensitive user data. The company maintains the breach was significantly smaller than the government’s figures suggest, creating a sharp divide between corporate messaging and official state findings.
Wi confirmed that the dispute will not derail broader strategic discussions with the United States. While the threat of additional tariffs under Section 301 looms over the bilateral relationship, Seoul is currently in active negotiations to mitigate those trade pressures. The government remains focused on maintaining stability in its core economic and security partnerships, treating the Coupang incident as a separate regulatory challenge rather than a geopolitical setback.
