Salk Institute Biologist Satchidananda Panda Resigns Following Probe

After two decades at the Salk Institute, renowned biologist Satchidananda Panda is stepping down on August 13. His departure follows an internal investigation into workplace misconduct allegations brought forward by a female research assistant, marking the second time in recent years the institution has examined his conduct.

The investigation began in March after the research assistant utilized official reporting channels to raise concerns. According to a statement from the La Jolla-based institute, the organization provided resources to the complainant and conducted an impartial inquiry. While the research assistant has since resigned, the institute maintained its commitment to addressing the reported grievances.

Panda, a prominent figure in circadian rhythm and intermittent fasting research, denied the allegations in correspondence cited by the journal Science. He characterized his resignation as a pivot toward writing a book on how recent scientific shifts regarding biological clocks will influence human health. Despite his stated commitment to a professional environment, colleagues noted that the scientist has been absent from the campus for several weeks.

His departure concludes a 22-year tenure during which he became one of the world's most cited researchers and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Salk Institute, which has benefited from millions of dollars in funding linked to his lab's work, currently faces the task of managing the transition of a high-profile research program under the shadow of these repeated allegations.
