The sequence began when one adult entered the river and encountered difficulty. Two others rushed in to assist, only to struggle themselves, prompting a final pair to attempt a rescue. All five individuals ultimately disappeared into the water. Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer noted that the victims lacked the necessary skills to handle the dangerous currents during the desperate attempt to save one another.
Emergency crews arrived after one of the two children, both under the age of 10, flagged down a passing motorist on a nearby road. Rescuers pulled two women from the water, but they were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital. Divers recovered the bodies of the three men the following morning. The surviving children are currently in the care of local family services as authorities examine the circumstances of the incident.
