Skyroot Aerospace Marks India’s Private Space Milestone with Vikram-1

The tension at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre dissolved into euphoria at 12:21 pm Saturday when the Vikram-1 rocket successfully reached orbit. This launch, dubbed 'Aagaman,' establishes Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace as the first private Indian entity to execute an orbital mission, signaling a transformative shift for the nation’s space industry.

Following a brief, planned hold that delayed the 11:30 am liftoff, the seven-storey-tall vehicle ascended from Sriharikota, carrying a diverse array of payloads. These include technology demonstrations from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, and DCubed, alongside artistic tributes featuring micro-sculptures of Sir CV Raman, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Built with an all-carbon composite structure, the rocket utilizes 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel boosters designed to transport up to 350 kg to Low Earth Orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally contacted Skyroot CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana to celebrate the achievement, highlighting the team’s average age of 28 years as a testament to India’s youthful ingenuity. The mission payload also carries a commemorative card inscribed with "Vande Mataram" by the Prime Minister, joining hundreds of messages from global citizens. Named for the father of India’s space program, Vikram Sarabhai, the vehicle builds on the success of the company’s 2022 suborbital test, effectively securing India’s position within the elite circle of nations hosting private orbital launch capabilities.
