The Vikram-1 rocket represents a strategic evolution for India’s private space sector. Unlike its predecessor, the suborbital Vikram-S, this new four-stage vehicle utilizes a hybrid propulsion strategy. The first three stages rely on solid-fuel Kalam series engines, while the final stage integrates the restartable Raman liquid engine. This configuration allows for precise orbital insertion, a requirement for commercial operators needing specific spacecraft positioning in Low Earth Orbit.
Technological innovation remains the core of the project. Skyroot has replaced traditional heavy metal frames with carbon composite structures, significantly improving the rocket's strength-to-weight ratio. By incorporating 3D-printed combustion chambers into their engines, the company has reduced part counts and manufacturing lead times. These efficiencies are designed to tackle the global backlog for small satellite launches, offering customers dedicated flight opportunities rather than the constraints of shared missions. As India’s private aerospace ecosystem matures, a successful launch would solidify the nation’s standing as a competitive provider of commercial space services.
