External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on Friday that India is monitoring the fallout from the revised rules, which target F, J, and I visa holders. While acknowledging that immigration policy remains a sovereign prerogative of the United States, Jaiswal signaled that the government will intervene whenever these administrative hurdles jeopardize the status of genuine travelers and scholars.
The updated DHS framework marks a significant departure from previous norms, which allowed international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals to reside in the U.S. without the burden of constant federal oversight. Beyond removing indefinite residency options, the new mandate cuts the post-graduation grace period for F-category students from 60 days to 30. This reduction forces a compressed timeline for those looking to transfer institutions, change legal status, or arrange their departure from the country.
