Trump Proposes Replacing Immigrant Truckers with Military Veterans

Amid a growing crackdown on undocumented labor, President Donald Trump has announced plans to prioritize American military veterans for trucking roles currently held by immigrant drivers. The proposal, framed as a public safety initiative, targets workers the administration claims are responsible for a rising number of fatal highway accidents.

Addressing the Pennsylvania Defence and Innovation Summit, Trump alleged that many undocumented drivers lack the necessary training and are prone to substance abuse, asserting that they pose a direct threat on American roadways. To fill the projected vacancies, the administration intends to launch a training program for former service members and streamline licensing, granting automatic eligibility for a commercial driver's license to any American veteran with military heavy-truck experience.

This policy shift creates significant uncertainty for the US trucking sector, which has historically relied on immigrant labor to mitigate chronic driver shortages. Indian immigrants, particularly from Punjab and Haryana, represent a major segment of this workforce, with the North American Punjabi Truckers Association estimating between 130,000 and 150,000 drivers from the region currently operating in the country. While the vast majority of these individuals hold legal status, the industry has faced heightened scrutiny following a series of high-profile accidents, including a fatal crash in San Bernardino County involving an undocumented driver. Despite the announcement, the administration has yet to outline the specific mechanisms for identifying undocumented commercial operators or managing the potential impact on the national supply chain.
