President Murmu to Launch Diplomatic Outreach in Eastern Europe

President Droupadi Murmu will embark on a six-day tour of Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania starting July 19, marking the first time an Indian head of state has visited these nations. The trip signals a deliberate shift to elevate India’s political and economic presence within the European theater.

The mission aims to transition existing diplomatic ties into comprehensive strategic partnerships. MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George noted that the administration is prioritizing direct engagement to bolster regional cooperation across political and strategic spheres. This journey reflects a broader strategy to diversify India’s reach, moving beyond traditional hubs to engage emerging partners in Central and Eastern Europe.

The final stop in Romania carries particular weight, as it represents the first presidential-level visit to the country in over three decades. This engagement serves as a focal point for India’s deepening relationship with the European Union, specifically targeting growth in bilateral trade and cross-sector investments. By prioritizing these specific capitals, New Delhi is signaling its intent to play a more active role in European economic integration and security dialogue.
