China Threatens Retaliation Over New U.S. Visa Restrictions

Beijing has formally demanded the immediate repeal of new U.S. visa regulations, labeling the policy discriminatory and warning that reciprocal measures remain on the table. The friction centers on tightened entry controls that significantly shorten permitted stay durations for Chinese journalists, students, and cultural exchange participants entering the United States.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian voiced sharp disapproval of the policy on Friday, framing the move as fundamentally counterproductive to the mutual interests of both nations. The U.S. government enacted the tighter controls on Thursday, specifically targeting professional and academic visitors.

Under the new protocols, the residency window for Chinese journalists in the U.S. has been curtailed to 90 days. This shift marks a notable escalation in administrative barriers between the two powers, suggesting a cooling in diplomatic relations regarding the movement of media personnel and educational exchange programs.
