Clashes Erupt During Qadian Municipal Council Presidential Vote

Political stability in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district fractured Thursday as a municipal presidential election spiraled into physical violence. The contest in Qadian, initially marked by verbal sparring between rival factions, quickly descended into a chaotic confrontation that required immediate intervention from police forces to restore a semblance of order.

Partap Singh Bajwa, the Punjab Assembly Leader of the Opposition, leveled sharp accusations against local law enforcement following the skirmish. He alleged that police targeted his supporters, resulting in two detentions and one individual remaining missing. Bajwa traced the roots of the friction to a prior incident in Selabpur village, situated roughly 10 kilometers from the council chambers.

The Congress leader did not mince words regarding the state of regional security. He described the current police administration as compromised, claiming that criminal gangs exert undue influence over state operations. According to Bajwa, the police have abandoned their duty to maintain neutrality, choosing instead to align themselves with hostile factions to suppress political opposition.
