Iran Decries US Strikes Near Children's Cancer Hospital

A child cancer ward at Shahid Baghaei Hospital in Ahvaz was forced to evacuate overnight following US airstrikes, prompting Tehran to brand the military operation a cowardly war crime. The facility, which provides critical chemotherapy, was caught in the crossfire as American forces targeted military sites across the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that 211 chemotherapy patients were displaced, drawing parallels between the incident and recent strikes on healthcare infrastructure in the region. Baqaei argued that the targeting of the hospital stripped those preaching human rights of their moral standing, as the strikes caused significant trauma to vulnerable patients.

Beyond the hospital, the scale of the operation was extensive. Explosions were reported in locations spanning from Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas to Khorramabad and Rask City. Iranian officials reported at least 35 deaths and over 300 injuries, including seven fatalities within an army barracks. US Central Command maintained that the strikes were necessary to neutralize threats to maritime transit, noting that its forces also disabled an empty oil tanker attempting to breach a naval blockade.

In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, while Jordan reported intercepting three incoming missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have downed an American MQ-9 drone near Andimeshk using a new air defense system. Despite the escalation, diplomatic channels remain open, though chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran’s adherence to existing memorandums of understanding is now contingent upon tangible benefits.
