The plea came moments before jury selection concluded, sparing the survivor from testifying. Prosecutors had prepared to present testimony from several other women who alleged similar patterns of sexual violence by Merrone spanning three decades. Merrone, who previously faced legal scrutiny following a Florida Keys incident that was later overturned, stood impassively in the courtroom as he admitted to five counts, including aggravated sexual abuse.
Evidence detailed a chilling sequence of events aboard the 623-foot vessel. After inviting the cadet and a friend to his quarters for a drink, Merrone provided alcohol that left both women with no memory of the night. The victim awoke the following morning to find herself partially undressed and experiencing physical trauma. When she confronted the captain, he attempted to normalize the encounter and later produced her missing underwear as a taunt. While Merrone faces up to life in prison, sentencing is set for December 22, with federal guidelines suggesting 15 to 19 years. The case has reignited scrutiny of the Merchant Marine Academy’s Sea Year program, which has faced repeated suspensions and policy overhauls due to systemic reports of sexual assault and harassment at sea.
