Zelenskyy Faces Backlash Over Defence Minister Shake-up

Protesters gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv today as parliament prepares to confirm a sweeping cabinet overhaul. The removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a primary architect of Ukraine’s drone warfare and procurement reform, has sparked rare public dissent and internal resignations at a precarious moment in the war.

Lawmakers are expected to vote Thursday to install Sergii Koretskyi, an energy sector executive, as prime minister. Under the proposed restructuring, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko is slated to take over the defence portfolio. The move represents the second major government reorganization in a year, occurring while Ukrainian forces simultaneously manage long-range strikes against Russian infrastructure and critical troop shortages on the eastern front.

Fedorov’s departure has triggered significant alarm among military reformers and the public. Credited with digitizing battlefield operations and scaling domestic drone production, his exit prompted the immediate resignation of Pavlo Yelizarov, a senior air force official who condemned the decision as detrimental to ongoing military modernization. Over 1,000 demonstrators voiced their disapproval in Kyiv, with critics arguing that the timing of the reshuffle threatens to erode the institutional stability necessary to sustain Western military support and battlefield momentum.
