The guidelines provide airlines with a structured framework covering the entire journey, from initial booking and check-in to the in-flight experience and arrival. This initiative follows recent standards for service dogs and seeks to replace fragmented airline policies with a predictable, industry-wide approach to animal welfare and operational efficiency.
Data from the 2025 Global Passenger Survey underscores the urgency of this move. While the demand for pet travel is rising, 41% of surveyed passengers struggle to determine if their pets are eligible for flight, while over a third report confusion regarding airline-specific rules. Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, emphasized that clear communication is essential, noting that well-prepared passengers are critical to maintaining safety and reliability for everyone on board. By aligning industry practices, the association intends to simplify the process, ensuring a more consistent and comfortable experience for both pet owners and cabin crews.
