Thailand Risks Diplomatic Fallout Over Potential Deportation of Dissidents

Four Chinese dissidents, each holding official refugee status from the UN, face imminent deportation from a Bangkok detention center. With Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul scheduled to visit Beijing next week, human rights advocates fear the government may prioritize diplomatic expediency over the lives of those seeking asylum.

Held at the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Centre, the group includes journalist Bai Zhaodong, Catholic activist Tan Yixiang, Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Xinyan, and China Democracy Party member Zhou Junyi. Human Rights Watch warned that these individuals face a high risk of persecution upon their return to China.

Sunai Phasuk, a senior adviser to the rights group, accused the Thai government of ignoring international legal obligations to maintain favor with Beijing. Previous incidents of forced repatriation have fueled concerns that Thailand will once again bypass the non-refoulement principle, which prohibits returning asylum seekers to countries where they face threats to their safety.
