World Bank Pledges $120 Million for Burkina Faso Social Resilience

A new $120 million financing package from the World Bank aims to bolster Burkina Faso’s social safety nets, targeting 120,000 vulnerable individuals. The five-year initiative focuses on displaced populations and returnees, seeking to transition households from immediate emergency assistance toward sustainable economic self-reliance amid ongoing regional instability.

World Bank Pledges $120 Million for Burkina Faso Social Resilience

The project, titled the Burkina Faso Economic Opportunities for Resilience, draws from a $100 million International Development Association credit and a $20 million grant via the Sahel Adaptive Social Protection Program. This funding aligns with the national strategy for 2024–2028, prioritizing food security, nutrition, and healthcare access. A core component involves integrating the national social registry with health insurance and displacement databases to streamline aid delivery. By emphasizing women’s economic empowerment and asset accumulation, the program attempts to mitigate the long-term impact of climate-related and economic shocks. World Bank Country Manager Hamoud Abdel Wedoud Kamil noted the initiative supports the government’s push for a more cohesive social protection framework, while Regional Practice Director Trina Haque highlighted the dual strategy of providing immediate relief alongside investments in financial and educational services to foster lasting livelihood improvements.
