Thailand Offers Venue for Renewed Myanmar Peace Negotiations

Thailand has stepped forward as a potential mediator for Myanmar’s fractured political landscape, offering to host formal dialogues between the ruling military and various ethnic rebel factions. This move aims to breathe life back into an ASEAN peace process that has largely stalled since the 2021 coup.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed that both the military-aligned negotiators and the opposition groups have acknowledged the futility of a purely military solution to the ongoing civil war. The conflict, which has triggered widespread displacement and a mounting death toll, remains the primary focus of the envoy’s recent separate discussions with stakeholders.

By positioning itself as a neutral ground for these talks, Bangkok seeks to revive the diplomatic momentum that has been absent since the regional bloc’s peace efforts were first introduced. These back-channel communications represent a strategic shift in addressing the violence that has destabilized the nation for years.
