Anil Menon Launches on Maiden Mission to International Space Station

Aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-29, Indian-origin astronaut Anil Menon lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Tuesday evening. Accompanied by cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, Menon began a journey toward the orbital laboratory, marking his first venture into space with an expected three-hour transit before docking.

The crew faces an eight-month residency aboard the station, where they will conduct a series of scientific trials and technology demonstrations. Their mission is scheduled to conclude with a return to Earth in 2027. Central to the expedition is the study of human physiological adaptation in microgravity, specifically focusing on shifts in blood flow, vein structure, and blood composition.

Beyond physiological monitoring, Menon is tasked with testing a method for producing intravenous fluids from the station’s drinking water. This innovation serves as a critical proof-of-concept for sustaining future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. NASA confirmed that the team will also utilize augmented reality and artificial intelligence to perform advanced ultrasound procedures, refining medical support protocols for deep space exploration.
