Poland Credits Modi With Deterring Russian Nuclear Use in 2022

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski has credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with preventing the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war, specifically claiming the Indian leader persuaded Vladimir Putin against deploying tactical nuclear weapons during the conflict’s most volatile period in late 2022.

Bartoszewski, speaking to the news agency ANI, emphasized that India’s historical ties with the Soviet Union and modern Russia grant New Delhi a rare diplomatic leverage. He described Modi as one of the few global statesmen capable of exerting genuine influence on the Kremlin, noting that Putin values the Indian Prime Minister's counsel in a way that few other world leaders can command.

Beyond personal influence, the Polish minister highlighted the strategic importance of neutral voices in de-escalating the war. He pointed to a shared interest in stability among non-hostile nations, specifically citing China’s Xi Jinping alongside Modi as figures whose appeals for restraint carry weight in Moscow.

Regarding previous bilateral tensions, Bartoszewski signaled a shift in Warsaw’s perspective on India's energy policy. While Poland previously criticized New Delhi for purchasing discounted Russian crude—arguing it sustained the Russian war economy—the minister acknowledged a pragmatic understanding of India’s economic motivations. He noted that both nations have moved past the friction, concluding that the issue is no longer a significant diplomatic hurdle.
