Gaza Violence Persists as Cairo Ceasefire Talks Stall

At least nine Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, including a 10-year-old boy and a senior Hamas police commander. This surge in violence complicates ongoing negotiations in Cairo, where representatives are struggling to advance a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan amid deep-seated mutual distrust.

In Rafah, Israeli gunfire claimed the life of 10-year-old Muataz Abu Shaar. Simultaneously, an airstrike in northern Gaza destroyed a police facility in Jabalia, resulting in at least seven deaths. Among the victims was Colonel Mohammad Marwan Salem, head of the local police force. A further strike in Khan Younis targeted a man identified by Israeli forces as a militant, leaving three others wounded. These incidents highlight the volatile nature of the current truce, which has seen over 1,100 Palestinian deaths since October despite a formal reduction in large-scale combat.

Diplomatic efforts in Cairo remain gridlocked as Hamas and Israeli officials clash over the fundamental terms of a long-term settlement. While discussions focus on military withdrawals, disarmament, and security arrangements, participants report minimal progress. Hamas leadership characterizes the ongoing military operations as a direct violation of existing agreements, while Israel continues to target security infrastructure it claims supports militant capabilities. With nearly two million people displaced and the total death toll since the October 7, 2023, conflict surpassing 73,000, the humanitarian situation adds immense pressure to the stalled mediation process.
